Shayla's name has a little story behind it. Mommy wanted to name her Layla and thought that it fit her really well but dad wasn't really sold on it. Then somewhere in the baby naming process we remembered the name of Josh's mission was Xela, pronounced the same as Shayla. (The mission is officially Quetzaltenango, Guatemala but the Mayan name for Quetzaltenango was Xela and that is what most people called it, probably because it is a lot easier to say).
Since Xela was really close to Layla it still had the similar feel and since Josh really had a lot of great experiences with his mission and it was such and important part of his life we thought that would be a great name. We did change the spelling as you probably noticed, we wanted people to be able to spell and pronounce her name so we went with an american friendly version.
Shayla's middle name comes from her two Aunt Jennifers. Tasha's sister Jennifer died a couple weeks before she was born. But she was longed for many times when Tasha was younger as she grew up with her two older brothers. Josh's only sister is Shayla's other Aunt Jennifer so we thought that would be a great way to remember and honor those two special people in our lives. Not to mention that as we thought about the name Jennifer we couldn't think of a single one (and we actually know quite a few) that we didn't think were great.
